Why not ‘Reflection’? In the aftermath of another intensively rewarding skills course, I'm compelled to reflect on the instrumental role of reflection in the process of Workplace-Based Assessments (WBPA) and demonstrating the Entrustment Scale. In my experience as healthcare educator, I feel that as educators , our ultimate goal is not just to impart knowledge but to foster a deep, intrinsic understanding and the ability to apply skills competently in real-world settings. This is why we do simulations right. I am biased maybe! However, this recent course reinforced my belief that reflection is a cornerstone in achieving this, especially when it comes to the sign-off(s) and certification process (credential-ling) for our candidates. We know that reflection encourages learners to critically evaluate their actions, decisions, and the outcomes thereof. It's a process that goes beyond the immediate performance, digging into the 'why' and 'how'—aspects that are crucial for deep learning and professional growth. When candidates reflect on their experiences, they're not just recounting what they did; they're analyzing their thought processes, decision-making, and adaptability in various clinical scenarios. Goes beyond checklists! This introspection is invaluable for educators and faculty to gauge a learner's readiness to progress on the Entrustment Scale, offering a more nuanced insight than Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS) often can. Through reflection, candidates demonstrate their understanding of the complexities and nuances of their actions, offering evidence of their competency and readiness for increased responsibility. It allows for a more personalized assessment, highlighting areas of strength and pinpointing opportunities for growth. This method surpasses the traditional WPBAs by fostering a culture of self-assessment and continuous improvement, essential components of lifelong learning in healthcare. I think going forward , let's champion the use of reflective practices in WBPA. It's not just about achieving a sign-off or earning a certificate; it's about nurturing competent, reflective practitioners who are prepared to tackle the challenges of healthcare with confidence and skill. Are you interested in enrolling in HEAL’s fifth annual virtual Train the Trainer Academy this October? 📣 The HEAL Train the Trainer Academy is an annual, two-day intensive workshop designed to equip health educators with the knowledge and teaching skills to train other health professionals in their communities to respond to human trafficking. The program is currently 100% virtual. 🧑💻 The Train the Trainer Academy was presented at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) November 2022 conference and has also been featured in the Academic Medicine journal. 🎓 After attending, participants will be able to: ✔️ Define factors that promote adult learning ✔️ Evaluate personal training strengths and areas in which to improve ✔️ Broaden their community of clinician-educators within human trafficking education We welcome participants from any profession who: ✔️ Have experience training clinicians about human trafficking, but who may have gaps in content knowledge and/or have not had formal education in how best to train adult learners. ✔️ Do not have experience training about human trafficking but have current or future responsibilities in providing this training for clinicians in their organization. The form is just for you to express your interest in potentially attending the Academy and is not binding in any way.
