Monday Morning Career Tip! Try many things early on in your career Now I'm not suggesting you shouldn't try different things as you advance in your career rather it takes a different aspect and tone later in your career. When I was in graduate school I knew I wanted to be in healthcare administration however I never knew in what capacity. Was it hospital operations? Was it on the insurance side? Was it quality? And the list goes on. The one thing I knew I needed was to expose myself to as much healthcare administration as possible. So I joined many organizations, got involved on multiple levels, read every periodical I could find, read every chapter of my textbooks (even the ones that weren't assigned). I tried my hand, as much as possible, to try many things and expose myself to the different areas of healthcare administration. As I grew within my first position my interests and upward progression became a narrower focus. I believe it's critical to expose yourself to as much as possible early in your career. And if you're not early in your career, no worries, it's never too late to start. When pharmacists across the globe come to the realization that they are their own walking, talking billboard they will brand themselves differently. The main reason you are an asset to your employer is because they’ve been able to market you as a pill pusher 💊. And you’re anything but. Pharmacy is one of the most dynamic careers in healthcare. The healthcare industry is one of the 3 wealthiest industries, only rivaled by wealth and relationship. But nothing else matters if you don’t have good health. So it begs the question: “why are healthcare workers remunerated so poorly?” Many are overworked, underpaid, undervalued, stressed, anxious and broke! In a system that’s broken, do you wish to be “broke as a joke, ready to choke”? I’m guessing not. So start building your own brand. Market yourself and your skills. Everything is learnable… Never did it before? Try it. Start small. Start out jankily. You learned to creep then walk. You can learn to take control of your career. That’s what I did and exit the 9-5 hustle and grind. No more working for peanuts. No more living paycheque to paycheque. After quitting my full-time job as a pharmacist I have proven to myself I can earn without my “boss” signing my checks every fortnight. I am my own BOSS! The CEO of me. I’m not saying this arrogantly. I’m saying, if you’re a licensed professional, your employer needs to borrow your licences for the show to go on. Why not leverage your position. And leverage your licence. I tried it and it worked! I earned my entire year’s income in just a few months. Would you like to do the same?
