Empowering health professionals through seamless transitions | Creator of StreamAhead | Career Journey Storyteller | Author of Your Next Career Step | Dietitian
Has it ever felt like this in your career? Like you are standing on the edge of everything you've never been before. The in-between place of the familiar and the unknown. You look behind you and see the skills and expertise you've gained. You look in front and don't know what it's going to ask of you, but you know it will be something you still need to develop. This can be scary enough to make you step back off that edge. In healthcare, we make many career transitions, but most of them are clearly laid out before us, offering a 20/20 vision of what's involved. Level 1 goes to level 2. Team Leader goes to Deputy Manager Manager goes to Director. Senior clinician goes to practice manager Many wonderful opportunities are available that leverage our knowledge, skills and ambition. But there may come a time when we realise that what's needed for the 'more' we are seeking is not more of what we already have. It's something new. What we can use is our ability to learn and reflect on what we do need. So if you can't see what's needed for the new pathway, work out what's needed for the next step and move in that direction. It's exciting and scary all at the same time. As someone who stepped over that edge, I can tell you it's worth it. I haven't lost anything, I've just evolved in ways I never anticipated.
